Soy Sauce and Ketchup
My dad was born in Japan and lived there until he was five. I'm not sure if that's where the obsession started but he loved putting soy sauce on EVERYTHING. Ketchup too. And no food could ever just be as it was meant to be: Ramen Noodles needed carrots, celery chunks then soy sauce. He added hot dogs and ketchup to macaroni and cheese and I recall him drizzling soy sauce over mashed potatoes. Alana (who was not the most adventurous eater as a kid) remembers him adding sour cream to macaroni and cheese as she fought back tears. Scrambled eggs were usually mixed with salsa or ketchup and he ate day-old leftovers just mashed up in a bowl and heated in the microwave.
I think it was around the age of 12 when I put my foot down and said NO MORE. Add the extras to your own food and leave mine alone...
